This project focused on using animation and storytelling to communicate Croydon Council’s long-term regeneration vision.
The goal was to translate a complex urban strategy into a series of films that could clearly explain the plan, engage a wide audience, and help people understand how the town centre is evolving — not through data or diagrams, but through movement, narrative, and clarity.
Across two films, motion became the primary tool for turning policy into something accessible and human.
CHALLENGE
Croydon’s regeneration strategy existed largely in written and static form. While detailed, it was difficult for non-specialist audiences to engage with or visualise.
The council needed video content that could:
The challenge was to use animation not as decoration, but as a way to guide understanding.
STRATEGY
The project was structured around two films, each with a distinct role.
The first film introduced the regeneration zones through animated storytelling built around the illustrated district map complemented by friendly iconography and colour-coded zones to translate complex planning concepts into accessible visuals.
Motion was used to guide the viewer through the town centre, revealing connections, movement, and hierarchy in a way that static visuals couldn’t. The pacing and transitions were carefully designed to make complex information easy to follow.

The second film shifted focus from infrastructure to people. Rather than explaining the plan, it explored how the regeneration would support community, services, and everyday life in Croydon. The follow-up motion piece employed a puzzle metaphor to demonstrate how public services interconnect within the overarching vision. The animation style became warmer and more expressive, with a stronger emphasis on character, colour, and rhythm.
Together, the films formed a narrative pair — one to explain the vision, the other to humanise it.

CREATIVE THINKING
Every design choice balanced formal structure with warmth and personality. Motion elements were subtle yet purposeful, while typography conveyed authority without losing a community-focused tone. The result was an engaging, inclusive visual language that informed without feeling cold.
“The videos brought our vision to life in a way we hadn’t seen before. They helped people understand not just what we’re doing, but why it matters. We’re all super impressed with the speed you managed to turn this around in, and the quality of the product.”
— Andy Thomas | Senior Stakeholder, Croydon Council
OUTCOME & IMPACT
The videos became key communication tools for Croydon Council, used across mayoral presentations, public engagement sessions, and stakeholder communications.
The success of the first film led directly to the commissioning of the second, allowing the narrative to expand from explanation to emotion. Together, they helped make a complex regeneration strategy easier to understand, discuss, and support.
REFLECTION
This project demonstrated how motion can be used as a strategic communication tool, not just a visual one.
By focusing on pacing, clarity, and narrative flow, the films helped transform policy into story — allowing people to understand not only what was changing, but why it mattered.
